Fiat Group Automobiles and KONE Corporation - world leader in the production of lifts and escalators - have signed an agreement for a period of 3 years (2013 - 2015) for the supply of Fiat Professional commercial vehicles across Europe.

The Finnish company based its choice on the low operating costs of Fiat Professional commercial vehicles (oil consumption, maintenance and repair), the brand's ability to manage the high logistics level required by KONE, and the quality and widespread coverage of the FGA service network, with more than 6,500 specialised workshops in Europe.

"We are proud that KONE Corporation has selected us as a preferred supplier owing to our reactivity and ability to respond to their needs for logistic integration and services," declared Christophe Bertoncini, Fleet European Director Fiat Group Automobiles. The same satisfaction is shared by Ondrej Chmel, Category Manager at KONE Corporation, whose main site is in Espoo, Finland. "The solutions offered by Fiat will contribute to achieving our goal in terms of CO2 emissions and cost stabilization."

The important agreement highlights the winning characteristics of all Fiat Professional models: reduced running costs, high level of ergonomics, low emissions and fuel consumption, reliability and strength at the highest levels. Through this agreement Fiat Professional will become KONE's preferred supplier/key supplier in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia with over 700 Fiat Fiorino units in 2013.

The Fiat Fiorino is a compact and economical vehicle in terms of running costs, is agile in traffic and easy to handle when parking as well as environmentally friendly, as the 75 HP 1.3-litre MultiJet turbodiesel shows. It boasts an excellent rage of over 1,000 km on a full tank of diesel (4.2 l/100 km in the combined cycle) and CO2 emissions of only 112 g/km, the best in class value. This latter aspect confirms that environmental protection is an essential guiding principle for Fiat Professional, together with all Fiat Group Automobiles brands, for the development of its models.

Fiat Group Automobiles Hellas wins two "green" awards

  •     The Fiat Group's significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions awarded in Greece.
  •     In 2011, the Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Abarth vehicles sold in Greece totalled an average of 122.26 g/km of CO2, corresponding to a 8.7% decrease with respect to 2010 (133.9 g/km).
  •     The Fiat brand holds the record in Greece with an average of 116.2 g/km vs. the 129.8 g/km of 2010.
  •     A record also for Fiat Professional light commercial vehicles thanks to their average CO2 emissions of 139.9 g/km compared to 162.0 g/km of 2010.  This is a 13.6% reduction, i.e. more than double the average 6% reduction of all the commercial vehicles sold in Greece.

Fiat Group Automobiles Hellas has won an Environmental Award in the "Green product or service" category for its   "Sustainable mobility and CO2 emission reduction" procedures. More in detail, Fiat Group Automobiles Hellas was singled out for having implemented green technologies on the Greek market which caused a significant reduction of polluting substance emissions and atmospheric pollution in the country.

In this area, Fiat Group Automobiles Hellas is presenting its range of cars and commercial vehicles running on alternative fuels, such as natural gas, to reduce emissions and consumption which translates into benefits for end customers as well. Fiat is taking this commitment seriously and has recently given a bi-fuel petrol/methane Fiat Panda Natural Power to the city of Thessaloniki to promote the company's green principles in the best possibly manner and introduce its comprehensive range of eco-friendly, fuel-effective, low-emission vehicles to Greek motorists.

Fiat Group Automobiles Hellas also won the "Green Leader Award" in the "Product carbon footprint" category. The "Green Leader Awards" are assigned by two non-profit organisations, CSE (Centre for Sustainability and Excellence) and myclimate, which examine companies, products and services aimed to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions deriving from their activities.

Climate changes and the energy crisis has confirmed the need to reconsider the automobile as a concept to develop, among other things, solutions for protecting the environment. This is why the Fiat Group constantly invests in important research activities for developing eco-technologies and developments for cars. The leadership of Fiat Group Automobiles Hellas in the area of eco-friendly mobility is no chance: taking all the cars and light commercial vehicles registered in Greece in 2011, the group - with the Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Abarth and Fiat Professional brands - ranks first in CO2  emission reduction with an average of 122.26 g/km of CO2 corresponding to a 8.7% reduction with respect to 2010 (133.9 g/km).

Furthermore, of the best selling auto brands in Greece, Fiat totalled the lowest CO2 emissions, with an average of 116.2 g/km, with respect to the 129.8 g/km of 2010, which means a drastic 10.5% reduction. Equally important was the success in the light commercial vehicle segment, where Fiat Professional ranked first of all manufacturers with an average of CO2 emissions equal to 139.9 g/km compared to the 162.0 g/km of 2010.  This is a 13.6% reduction, equal to more than double the average 6% reduction obtained by all light commercial vehicles.

The two green awards won by Fiat Group Automobiles Hellas are added to the Fiat Group's long list of important international awards which confirm its constant commitment to eco-compatible mobility, a strategy which has made Fiat undisputed leader in Europe. Over the past five years, Fiat has recorded the lowest level of CO2 emissions of all cars sold in Europe, with an average value of 118.2 g/km in 2011 (4.9 g/km less than the average of 2010). The Fiat Group as a whole ranked first with 123.3 g/km. This achievement has been certified by JATO Dynamics, world leader in consulting and research for the automotive industry. One important recognition and an ongoing improvement: over the last 4 years, Fiat Automobiles has reduced its average emissions by 14%, from 137.3 to 118.2 g/km of CO2, which is significantly lower than the average target of 130 g/km set out by the European Union for 2015.

New Fiat Panda

English: Fiat Panda at IAA Frankfurt 2011 (Tom...
Image via Wikipedia

The new Panda is the consistent evolution of an invention that in its 31-year history has always been likeable, versatile and easy to use. The Panda is all this and something more: a brand rich in strong rational and emotional value, a car of which more than 6.4 million units have been produced, and which has won 16 million drivers different from one another in terms of taste, age, nationality and background. A best seller which has significantly contributed to the undisputed leadership of Fiat in this segment: from the first 600 to the 500, from the 126 to the first Panda, from the Cinquecento to the Seicento, from the second generation Panda (2003) to the new 500 launched in 2007. Fiat has always been the point of reference of the city-car segment in Europe due to its unrivalled expertise developed in the continental cities.

The third generation of the Panda model springs forth from this technical and human heritage. It comes of age offering more quality in terms of space, comfort, functionality, technology and safety features. It combines the best features of the first- and second-generation cars. This intelligent vehicle is ideal for those wanting to combine the practical handling of a city car with the space and comfort of a five-door compact car. All this is further enhanced by a modern and harmonious look which exalts that pleasant appearance of the Panda that by now has become a part of our collective memory just like other objects resulting from Italian creativity, from the Fiat 500 to the Vespa Piaggio, Moka Bialetti and Cubo by Bruno Munari. Unique products that can neither be judged by their appearance nor just represent a good engineering exercise. Instead they are powerful alchemies, innovative in their design and concept that redefine the common points of reference and comparison. When this happens, essential masterpieces in the history of industry are born. The Fiat Panda is one of these.

Simply Panda

Panda is the byword for substance, practicality and usefulness. There is a concept of beauty connected to making all of this visible and perceptible, a concept pursued throughout the new Panda design procedure. Now at its third generation, the Panda is improving each of its elements both functionally and in attention to detail. The result is of great overall harmony, due to applying signs consistent with one another that increases its usability and pleasing design values.
Starting from the concept that every one of us has different requirements, the new car makes maximum use of the interior space, rationalising the dimensions. Although continuing to be a very compact car, the Panda has grown just a few centimetres to ensure the attainment of the highest standards of safety and improve the generous level of passenger room.
With a length of 365 centimetres, a width of 164 and a height of 155, and with five doors, the new Panda can comfortably accommodate up to five people and it has one of the most spacious boots in its segment: 225 litres which become 260 with the sliding rear seat in the fully forward position up to the point of reaching 870 litres with the backrest of the rear seats folded down.
Fiat Panda offers maximum freedom of use due to the modularity of its space, the numerous storage compartments and a wide array of front and rear seat configurations. Besides, every one of us has our own lifestyle, a personal relationship with our own objects, our own way of distributing them in space. And of finding them again. So in this sense the new model is a place to fill in an entirely personal way, but at the same time it is a place that you are glad to share with others, just as if it were a cozy Italian home full of warmth and generosity. The exteriors are also distinguished by an unmistakable "Italian style", a "Mediterranean" stylistic language where the smooth shapes give it an appealing, solid and protective look.

More Panda

The new Panda is generous and intelligent because it makes innovative features that simplify and improve life on-board accessible to everyone. After all, these days people who choose a compact car do not want to forgo the technology generally reserved for cars of higher segments. The Panda manages to accommodate these needs with the need for sustainable, safe mobility that is accessible both in terms of price and running costs. Thus it combines the best features of the first- and second-generation cars. This is a new intelligent solution especially in such uncertain economic times.
Specifically, behind that fun and confident appearance, the Panda offers sophisticated technological solutions which are nonetheless straightforward to use and satisfy both the concrete needs of everyday mobility as well as the growing social awareness of the environment and safety issues. Here then are two new highly valuable devices which buyers would only expect to find on cars from superior segments, namely: the "Low Speed Collision Mitigation" braking system and the "Blue&Me TomTom 2 LIVE" navigation system. Contents such as Start&Stop, Gear Shift Indicator (GSI), ecoDrive and ECO mode of the TwinAir Turbo engine are added to these. Acronyms which are now part of the standard terminology that Fiat has contributed to create and develop and which are now grouped together in "Air Technologies", the Fiat brand that identifies the low environmental impact technologies which team eco-friendliness with driving satisfaction.

That philosophy led to defining the range of engines, all champions of fuel consumption, emissions and performance. Standing out are the brand new two-cylinder engines equipped with the Start&Stop system as standard: 85 HP 0.9 TwinAir Turbo, named "International Engine of the Year 2011", and the brand new 65 HP 0.9 aspirated TwinAir, adopted for the first time. The renewed 69 HP 1.2 Fire petrol engine and the 75 HP 1.3 Multijet II, also with Start&Stop supplied standard, complete the range of engines.
At its launch, the new model is available with front-wheel drive - then the Panda 4x4 will make its debut - and offers 3 trim levels (Pop, Easy and Lounge), 10 body colours, 9 interior environments, 2 hub caps and 2 14" and 15" alloy wheels. The new contents include the "Blue&Me TomTom LIVE" that combines the advantages of an infotainment system which is integrated and connected with those of a portable navigation system, opening the doors to connectivity. Afterwards the innovative optional LSCM (Low Speed Collision Mitigation) braking system will become available. It can detect an obstacle present nearby and automatically brake at speeds slower than 30 km/h.

In short, everything is a whole lot easier with Panda. It is easier to move, to park, to find the right amount of space and to adjust the vehicle to suit you, so that you can feel at ease and interact with others. Important solutions that are expressed in a philosophy of life. Besides, before being a car the Panda is an idea that has generated another way of experiencing a car in total freedom. That's because today as always, whoever chooses a Panda is free from the conventional mould, fashions and classifications. In a sense, you could say that it is a non-conformist car, which from its very first generation was able to astonish with simple yet not obvious solutions. It is precisely its vocation for structural and constructive simplicity that now allows it to further evolve without ever losing its true nature of revolutionary car. Suffice it to say that it was the first car of its segment to bear the prestigious title of "Car of the Year 2004". It was the first compact to feature a diesel engine (1986) and it was the first to offer both four-wheel drive (1983) and a range of eco-friendly engines designed to limit fuel consumption (the Panda Elettra was introduced in 1990, one of the first electric cars). It was the first 4x4 city car to reach Everest's base camp at an altitude of 5,200 metres (2004).

Totally Italian

Icon of design and Italian know-how, the new Panda is the evolution of a successful model and destined to confirm Fiat's position as undisputed leader in the city-car category. For this reason, Fiat Group Automobiles has set its sights on ensuring top quality throughout the entire product development process and its engineering. Such a design could only be manufactured in an equally advanced factory, one redesigned with the same criteria. This is why the new model is made in Pomigliano d'Arco, near Naples. The industrial area has been entirely refurbished for the event with new systems, particularly in the body-in-white and assembly sector, and an innovative "Quality Centre". More than being simply the most advanced Fiat has, these new systems are also among the most advanced in the world.
The Giambattista Vico plant was brought to technological and organisational excellence in a record time of 12 months and with a total investment of Euro 800 million in both machinery and people, for whom to the present day 200 thousand hours of training have been put in.
The result is a car that represents the passion and the design and building ability of a brand born over a century ago. The heritage of Fiat is all this and more, combined with the commitment and professional pride of thousands of people - engineers, factory workers, executives - who have followed one another over the years in the factories and in the offices.

A 31-year success story

The Panda went down in automotive history in 1980 when Fiat presented the first model at the Geneva Motor Show, the result of research started in 1976. With the Panda an idea was born, an idea which has generated another way of experiencing a car: simple, democratic, fun and at the same time revolutionary owing to its intuitive and brilliant solutions. It was the first generation of one of the most highly appreciated European city cars that never ceases to amaze. In a three-year period it was enriched with the textile sun-roof version and the four-wheel drive version, and in July 1984 the one millionth Panda produced after only four years from its birth arrived.
Its success was renewed in 1986 with the second series of the first generation. The engines were one of the major innovations. The new 34 HP and 45 HP FIRE 769cc and 999cc replaced the 652cc and 903cc. The diesel engine was also introduced. But what did not change was the customer's love for this car. Over the next two years it surpassed the threshold of 2 million units produced, and in 1990 the range grew, enriched with the futuristic Panda Elettra, the first version fitted with an electric motor. The first-generation Panda was produced up until 2003. Up until the very last minute it held one of the top spots in the rankings of utility cars purchased.

The moment of the second generation arrived in September 2003. The Fiat Panda was launched on the market with a design that interpreted the new style trends. It abandoned the three-door bodywork and grew 13 centimetres longer and a dozen wider to make room for a comfortable five-door MPV configuration. And it was immediately a hit. It was the first car in this segment to be awarded the prestigious "Car of The Year 2004" title. The model became a downright "platform" on which Fiat created an entire family of cars boasting technology and attention to detail worthy of a higher category. In 2007 the one millionth second generation unit rolled off the line. About 6 million first and second-generation Pandas were produced.
Now it is the turn of the third-generation Fiat Panda to continue down this path embarked on 31 years ago on the roads of the world.

Fiat at the 2011 Bologna Motor Show

Chief Executive Officer of Fiat Group, Sergio ...
Image via Wikipedia
Fiat is taking part in the 2011 Motor Show with an appealing stand that emphasises the brand's unique position on the international motoring stage. Dominated by white and marked by essential lines and an attentive play of technological references, the stand in Bologna is the ideal setting to admire both major national premieres and tested models of the wide Fiat range up close.
The undisputed star of the stand is the new Panda, consistent evolution of a successful city car that in its 31-year history has always been a synonym of functional design, manoeuvrability, space, reliability and comfort. To emphasise the strong bond with the first generation of the model, a Fiat Panda of the 1980s surrounded by 5 vehicles of the new model that represent a significant sample of the range in terms of colours, optional extras and accessories is on display in Bologna.
Starting from the concept that every one of us has different requirements, the new Panda makes maximum use of the interior space, minimising the obstructions. Although continuing to be a very compact car, the Panda has grown just a few centimetres to ensure the attainment of the highest standards of safety and improve the generous level of passenger room and capacity of the boot still further. With a length of 365 centimetres, a width of 164 and a height of 155, the new Panda can comfortably accommodate up to five people and is equipped with one of the roomiest luggage compartments in its segment. In addition, modularity is enhanced by numerous storage compartments and a wide array of front and rear seat configurations. Besides, every one of us has our own lifestyle, a personal relationship with our own objects, our own way of distributing them in space. And of finding them. So in this sense the new model is a place to fill in an entirely personal way, but at the same time it is a place that you are glad to share with others.
On the subject of engines, the Panda range has been expanded with the TwinAir twin-cylinder engines: the 85 HP Turbo and the new 65 HP aspirated engine, with even lower fuel consumption. At its launch, the new model will be available with front-wheel drive - and later the Panda 4x4 will make its debut - and will offer a range made up of: 4 engines (85 HP 0.9 TwinAir Turbo, 65 HP 0.9 Aspirated TwinAir (unavailable in Italy), 69 HP 1.2 Fire and 75 HP 1.3 MultiJet II), 3 trim levels, 10 body colours, 3 interiors, 2 hub caps and 2 14" and 15" alloy wheels for a total of over 600 combinations. The new contents include the "Blue&Me TomTom LIVE" that combines the advantages of an infotainment system which is integrated and connected with those of a portable navigation system, opening the doors to connectivity. Already from its first year of life, an innovative optional braking system will become available. It can detect an obstacle present nearby and automatically brake at speeds slower than 30 km/h.
The Bologna Motor Show is also the ideal opportunity for discovering the new Punto 2012. It is an important product innovation for the model that will allow it to remain among the European best sellers also in 2012. Also making their debut along with the aesthetic changes will be the two-cylinder 85 HP TwinAir engine - named "International Engine of the Year 2011" - which proves that the model is a perfect balance between eco-friendliness (98 g/km CO2) and driving pleasure (85 HP at 5,500 rpm and a torque of 145 Nm at 2,000 rpm).
As for the 500 model, the TwinAir name on the Fiat Punto 2012 will indicate not only the revolutionary two-cylinder engine, but also a new trim level with a unique and recognisable look on display in the stand area, which is marked by the exclusive shade of Verde Lime combined with the glossy black "pianoblack" roof.
A Punto 2012 equipped with the evolution of the 85 HP 16V 1.3 MultiJet is also on display beside this special version. With the introduction of two new technologies (Intelligent Alternator and Intelligent Flow), it can reach the record level of 90 g/km CO2.
Finally, a show car that combines highly recognisable elements, such as the exclusive opaque yellow colour, with the performance of the 135 HP MultiAir turbo engine will be on display together with these two versions that will be introduced to the market in early 2012.
The Bologna stand certainly would not be complete without the Fiat 500 and Fiat Freemont, two cars that ideally represent the new journey begun by the Fiat brand with the alliance between the Fiat and Chrysler Groups. A journey full of colour, simplicity and ingenious solutions that involves many people around the world and brings two apparently remote industrial cultures closer together. It is enough to observe these two cars to discover how often opposites can come together and blend beautifully: small/large, aesthetic/practical, emotional/rational... 500/Freemont. So if the Fiat 500 is the car that crossed the ocean from Europe to go to America, becoming a style icon and one of the symbols of the new industrial alliance, Freemont made the reverse journey: from America to Europe, where it "obtained citizenship" with the contribution of Fiat technology and style. And that's not all. The 500 embodies Italian DNA: the values of style, charm and ingenuity for which the brand is recognised worldwide, as the success of this model in all the markets where it has been launched also demonstrates. The Fiat Freemont on the other hand has global DNA. It was born in the USA, grew up in Italy and enjoys success in Europe.
The public visiting the Motor Show will be able to admire the latest Fiat 500 innovations - the Nation Limited Edition, the refined 500C by Gucci and the new TwinAir trim level with the "byAbarth" pack - while in an area set up outside it will have the chance to try out a few 500 TwinAirs that ensure the ultimate "fun to drive" feel, low fuel consumption and the lowest level of emissions in the world for a petrol engine (90 g/km with Dualogic robotised gearbox and 92 g/km with manual gearbox), as well as a highly satisfying retro sound reminiscent of the first legendary 500s.
With the prestigious 5-star Euro NCAP and 40 awards it has won internationally to date, the 500 has proven since its launch in July 2007 that it is not merely a super-compact city car, but an authentic platform upon which Fiat is building a whole family of cars with technology and attention to detail worthy of a higher category. Specifically, the Fiat 500 Nation Limited Edition is the tribute that the brand dedicates to the great countries where the car is sold. With just 500 numbered units made in the saloon version and 500 in the convertible version, the first edition pays homage to the United States, celebrating the arrival of the 500 in North America and the beginning of collaboration with the American pop singer Jennifer Lopez.
The spotlights are also trained on the Fiat Freemont that recently won the prestigious five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Five stars is the top score that this independent consortium has been awarding since 1997 after testing vehicle safety. The rating is even more important considering that since 2009 Euro NCAP has adopted a new scheme composed of four areas of assessment, namely Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian Protection and a new area: Safety Assist. Injury avoidance and mitigation functions, such as seat belt reminder, ESP and speed limiter, are also rated. Achieving a five-star rating will become increasingly tougher year by year (2009, 2010-2011, 2012).
The first Fiat vehicle to be produced from its partnership with the Chrysler Group, the Freemont is "All the car you want" because it is equipped with everything you need to go where you want, with whoever you want, and without compromise. This is partly achieved by the new all-wheel drive (AWD) that allows you to control the car in any situation, in total safety.
Two examples of the Fiat Freemont are displayed on the stand. They are equipped with the 170 HP 2.0 MultiJet 2, one with front wheel drive and the other with all-wheel drive (AWD) with 6-speed automatic gearbox, both with 7 standard seats. Moreover, the AWD version is offered with the exclusive Lounge trim level including satellite navigation with 8.4" touch screen, DVD and rear TV camera, 19" alloy wheels, automatic three-zone climate control, leather seats, rear parking sensors and Alpine sound system with 6 premium speakers + subwoofer.
The same freedom and flexibility are guaranteed by another two models displayed at the Bologna Motor Show: the Fiat Qubo Trekking with Nitro kit and the Fiat Sedici MY 2012. The first vehicle is marked by the strong "Outdoor" characterisation of its exteriors in addition to the traction control system Traction+ and the new Nitro Kit, developed together with the American company Nitro (world manufacturer of snowboards). A Fiat Sedici MY 2012 model is also on display next to the Qubo Trekking. It is the versatile car that since its launch in 2006 until today has recorded more than 76,000 registered vehicles, proving to be the best selling compact SUV in Italy. To face up to future challenges and a segment constantly growing, the Fiat Sedici updates with the Model Year 2012, offering certain new exterior and product features, in addition to a significant enrichment of the standard equipment.
Note that all the Fiat products displayed in Bologna are "Air Technologies" ambassadors, the new brand that contains all the low impact technologies able to combine respect for the environment with driving pleasure, and expresses the attitude with which Fiat calls people to experience their cars: with optimism, fun, economy and respect. From engines to alternative fuel systems, from gearbox and traction management systems to Start&Stop and from the technical solutions designed to improve vehicle dynamic efficiency to the exclusive eco:Drive software that allows drivers to check and correct their driving behaviour with the aim of reducing emissions and saving fuel: these are the thematic areas of "Air Technologies" that translates the Fiat philosophy of converting the needs of the people into concrete solutions immediately available today for all.
Finally, there will be a multimedia workstation in the exhibition area that will let users challenge each other in exciting races driving the new Panda using a smartphone as a joystick. The stand set up at the Bologna show will also introduce visitors to the products of FGA Capital, a finance company specialising in the automotive segment, through illustrative materials and certain dedicated publications. The finance company operates in Italy (with the Sava and Leasys-Savarent brands) and across Europe with a sole mission: supporting the sales of all Fiat Group Automobiles brand vehicles by offering innovative financial products with high added value services targeted to the dealership network, private customers and companies.

The new Bravo MY 2010

Fiat Bravo, being introduced to the public in 2010, comes with some major style innovations that make it even more modern and elegant.
Starting from the exteriors. The front-end is new with a black and metallic grids. The grill frame has a metallic finish on all versions, except for the Emotion, on which it is chrome-plated. Furthermore, all versions come with mirrors and handles in matching body colour, while the headlights are burnished and clear at the direction indicators. Two new colours complement the palette: Melodic Grey and Ballad Pearl.
The interiors, particularly of the Active and Dynamic versions, are also new. The Active version has a carbon-look dashboard, more modern and elegant. The Dynamic version – the most popular on the market – has fabrics with new patterns and colours, such as Sand which makes the interior even brighter.
The engine range is the same as ever, but it is well worth noting that the 1.4 - 90 HP on the Fiat Bravo 2010 is a Euro 5 with 146 g/km of CO2 (greatly ahead of the compulsory application of the standard). The Emotion version is also available with LPG engines.
For a more complete, customised offering, the Bravo 2010 has new (market-specific) content packs, which are considerably more cost-effective solutions for customers with respect to selecting optional features one at a time. For example, the Active Sound pack (for Active) includes fog lights, CD radio and MP3 player; the Blue Dynamic pack (for Dynamic) includes Blue&Me, rear parking sensors and rear electric windows; the Blue Emotion pack (for Emotion) includes Blue&Me, front and rear parking sensors, light and rain sensor and electrically folding mirrors; and finally, the Blue Sport pack (for Sport) includes Blue&Me, 18” alloy rims, tinted back seat windows and rear window.
Bravo kicks off the new year with a renewed model, consolidating the ongoing innovation strategy that has made it be appreciated by an increasingly larger public. In 2009, it was once again one of the most popular cars in the medium compact C segment. It leads the LPG segment in Italy (totalling nearly 40% of the private customer market) and stands out in the 5-door saloon sub segment.

TWIN-AIR - 85 HP, world preview

The new two-cylinder engine family made by FPT - Fiat Powertrain Technologies called TWIN-AIR will be making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. This is a brand-new concept on the worldwide auto scene and confirms the leadership of the Fiat Group in this field.
Using next-generation technology, the new engine implements the revolutionary Multiair system combined with special fluid dynamics optimised for the best fuel efficiency. Furthermore, by taking the concept of downsizing to the extreme and masterly tuning the basic mechanics, the new family - delivering from 65 to 105 HP - emits 30% less CO2 than an engine of equal performance.
Visitors to the show will admire the first application of this new engines on a 500, the first Fiat model on which it will be introduced next September. The car is equipped with a two-cylinder turbo 85 HP (900 cc) engine which has the lowest CO2 emission levels for a petrol engine (up to 95 g/km) without compromising performance and driving pleasure. Compared with the two engine versions available today, it provides excellent performance with a major fuel reduction: the new turbo two-cylinder 85 HP engine consumes down to 15% less fuel and has 25% more performance than the 1.2 8v, while fuel consumption drops to a remarkable 30% with respect to the 1.4 16v with comparable performance and the same high driving pleasure.
Furthermore, with respect to a four-cylinder of equal performance and medium displacement, the new engine is significantly shorter (-23%) and lighter (-10%), opening the way to interesting further developments, such as methane fuel feed or hybrid technology combinations, again under the sign of greater eco-friendliness. In particular, a methane version of the TWIN-AIR will be available soon providing a further CO2 emission reduction: this is possible by adopting a pair of special injectors in addition to the petrol injectors on the intake manifold rails. Improving these fuel saving results using internal combustion engines will be difficult and alternative technologies will need to be developed. The combination of traditional engines and electric motors appears particularly promising. Precisely because of its small size, the TWIN-AIR is well suited to be coupled with an electric motor, and in general with a device arranged between engine and gearbox for recovering and storing the energy which is normally wasted during braking.
Nothing short of an engineering gem, the two-cylinder implements the revolutionary Multiair technology developed and patented by FPT – Fiat Powertrain Technologies, which was introduced on FIRE engines last year for the first time. The heart of Multiair is a new electro-hydraulic valve management system that reduces fuel consumption by controlling air directly via the inlet valves (without using the throttle). Multiair reduces polluting emissions (thanks to improved combustion control) and also considerably improves performance by boosting driveability with respect to a traditional petrol engine of equal displacement.
Furthermore, the new TWIN-AIR engine takes the concept of downsizing to the extreme: combining a small displacement engine with a next-generation turbocharger provides performance comparable to - or even better than - that of a larger engine but with less fuel consumption and lower emissions. And more: the turbo significantly increases the maximum torque, making it available at a very low rpm, with the result of offering greater flexibility and an unrivalled promptness of response compared to conventional aspirated engines. All this comes with a simple build that benefits strength and reliability.
Last but not least, the new engine was painstakingly optimised and tuned. For instance, the basic two-cylinder architecture - combined with the low friction of internal parts - ranks this engine best in the "friction" class in the world. Furthermore, computer simulations have been used to identify the best possible standard displacement in terms of thermo-dynamic efficiency, and the best fluid dynamic configuration to optimise and get the best out of the MultiAir system. Finally, special attention has been placed on the NVH (Noise, vibration, and harshness) aspect to ensure vibration performance at least equivalent to that of a four-cylinder, with equal performance but with a characteristic sound. For this purpose, a balancing countershaft was used to maintain optimal vibration levels in all operating conditions of the engine, from the idling speed to top power.

Fiat at the 80th International Geneva Motor Show

Fiat 500Image via Wikipedia

Fiat returns to the International Geneva Motor Show with a spectacular stand where important world previews and affirmed models will take turns to underline the distinctiveness of the brand on the international auto scene.
The exhibition area develops the "World I Want" theme seen through the eyes of children because a brand projected into the future must "listen" to the little ones who will be making the world big one day. The stand was "designed" by children who let their imagination loose and expressed their vision of a future always more focused on environmental friendliness. A cheerful, gay place is created, where houses are built on clouds and a rainbow welcomes visitors into the Fiat world. The heart of the stand is the 500 Configurator, a playful installation which perfectly blends into the mood of the exhibition area.
The houses and clouds of a city dreamed up by children showcase the latest auto innovations, cars which are a step forward on the way towards sustainable mobility.
Set in a unique tree-shaped installation with sparkling optical fibre filaments, the guest of honour of the stand is a technological masterpiece developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies: the two-cylinder 85 HP TWIN-AIR (900 cc). Visitors can preview it for the first time in the world both in a showcase and fitted aboard a 500, the first Fiat model on which it will be introduced next September. Progenitor of new family of two-cylinder engines made by FPT - Fiat Powertrain Technologies, it implements a revolutionary Multiair system combined with specific fluid dynamics optimised for the best fuel efficiency. Furthermore, by taking the concept of downsizing to the extreme and masterly tuning the basic mechanics, the new family - delivering from 65 to 105 HP - emits 30% less CO2 than an engine of equal performance. Still under the sign of technological innovation at the service of the environment, other important innovations will be treading the Swiss catwalk, starting from the world preview of the new Doblò Natural Power, equipped with a 1.4 16v T-JET (petrol and methane) engine reasserting the undisputed world leadership of Fiat in the field of cars and vehicles with original-equipment (OEM) dual-fuel engines.
Spotlights will also be on the Bravo MY 2010 that will be presented with a 1.4 Multiair (140 HP) and standard Start&Stop system at the Show. Available from next June, this is a petrol engine with one of the best emission/power ratios in the world: only 132 g/km and a power of 140 HP. Later on, at different times according to the markets, a specific pack will be available, which will cut CO2 to 129 g/km, the best emission/power ratio for turbo engines in this power range.
Furthermore, with respect to the 1.4 16v T-JET - 120 HP, the 1.4 Multiair - 140 HP has more power and torque at low rpm (+16%) and the adoption of a Start&Stop system cuts consumption and emissions (-10%). In brief, the new engine ensures top-notch eco-friendliness (it is Euro 5 type-approved) without compromising on performance and driving pleasure. That is not all. For an even more dynamic driving experience, the Sport function can be selected by pressing a button - Sport version only - to change acceleration response and steering settings.
With a fresh style and interiors, the model offers new, competitively priced packs confirming the brand's strategy aimed at ongoing innovations that have made the Bravo one of the most popular cars in the medium compact C segment in 2009. It leads the LPG segment in Italy (totalling nearly 40% of the private customer market) and stands out in the 5-door saloon sub segment.
One of the stars of the stand is the 500 by Diesel, springing from the combined efforts of the creative teams of Fiat and Diesel, the Italian designer brand famous worldwide. The car has a special “Midnight Indigo” blue body colour, reminiscent of the hues of denim, and is equipped with a brand-new, second-generation Multijet 1.3 - 95 HP (Euro 5) with standard Start&Stop system.
A slot will also be devoted to the Punto EVO. Two engine versions will be introduced in at the Swiss motor show, putting the accent on technological excellence and care for details: the powerful Multiair 1.4 16v - 135 HP Euro 5, with CO2 emissions of merely 129 g/km and an unprecedented 1.3 Multijet II - 85 HP with ECO pack allowing a very low emission level (99 g/km).
Furthermore, in Geneva, Fiat will also be showing the most recent results of its ongoing commitment to staying close to motorists’ needs. This commitment is evident in the multi-faceted nature of the product range, in the new models and also in the updates to existing ranges. The context is a very lively one, as the currently manufactured models showcased at the stand demonstrate. First in line is a seven-seater Doblò with 1.6 - 105 HP Euro 5 Multijet engine and Start&Stop that confirms the remarkable flexibility of the model in terms of space, making it the new Fiat “family space”. Next is an exciting 500C, the original cabriolet version that pays homage to the 1957 open-air vehicle but comes packed with advanced solutions in build, engines and passenger comfort. Introduced last July, the Fiat 500C is further confirmation of the great success of the model, which will soon reach the goal of 500,000 units made in less than three years.
Finally, the 80th Geneva Motor Show will grandstand two models made for motorists who want to tackle the most demanding terrain in an eco-friendly way. On one end, there is the Fiat Sedici, with new style and engines that make it the most eco-friendly Euro 5 SUV. It fits two new engines (petrol 1.6 16v - 120 HP and diesel 2.0 16v Multijet - 135 HP with 129 CO2 g/km). On the other end, there is the Panda Cross equipped with a 1.4 - 70 HP (Euro 5) dual-fuel (petrol-methane) engine, representing the fortunate Fiat model that will be celebrating its thirtieth birthday, precisely in Geneva, where it was introduced for the first time in 1980. Over 6 million units have been sold worldwide until today.
Last but not least, brochures and customised totems at the stand will be introducing visitors to the products of FGA Capital, a joint venture of Fiat Group Automobiles and Crédit Agricole specialised in the automotive segment. The finance company will be operative in Italy and across Europe with a sole mission: supporting the sales of all Fiat Group Automobiles brand vehicles by offering innovative financial products with high added value services targeted to the dealership network, private customers and companies.

Fiat Automobiles dominates CO2 emission reduction ranking in Europe for the third year running

Fiat S.p.A.Image via Wikipedia

Among Europe's best-selling automotive brands and for the third year running, Fiat Automobiles has logged the lowest average value for CO2 emissions of cars sold in 2009: 127.8 g/km (it was 133.7 g/km in 2009). The accomplishment was recognised by JATO, the world leader in automotive advisory and research services, founded in 1984 and now operating in over 40 countries. The bottom line shows FIAT ahead of Toyota (130.1 g/km), Peugeot (133.6 g/km), Renault (137.5 g/km), Citroen (137.9 g/km), Ford (140.0 g/km), Opel/Vauxhall (148.9 g/km), Volkswagen (150.4 g/km), AUDI (160.9 g/km) and Mercedes (176.4 g/km).

Fiat also ranks first among groups (131.0 g/km), ahead of Toyota, PSA, Renault and Hyundai. The success of the Group is driven firstly by Fiat's achievement, but also by the excellent result of Alfa Romeo, which with an average reduction of 18.3 g/km and 109,542 cars sold, totalled the best global reduction on the entire range.

Fiat’s commitment has always aimed at the real needs of the public and will not be stopping here. The eco-friendly achievement is the result of a long-term strategy based on a two-pronged approach: implementing technological solutions aimed at containing consumption and emissions and raising the awareness of motorists to spur a more responsible, eco-compatible use of their car.

Firstly, unique, exclusive engines, such as the unprecedented Twin-Air two-cylinder which will be debuting in world preview at the Geneva Motor Show from 4th to 14th March 2010. Visitors to the Swiss event will have the opportunity to admire the first application of the engine in a Fiat 500 - the first Fiat model on which it will be introduced next September. With a displacement of 900 cc, a power of 85 HP and CO2 emissions equal to 95 g/km, it is the benchmark in its class.

Innovative solutions which are already available today include Multiair technology for petrol engines: by implementing a new electro-hydraulic valve control system, combustion is optimal at all times, CO2 emissions are cut by 25% and power is increased by 10% at the same time.

State-of-the-art technology is implemented also in the field of diesel engines, with second-generation 1.3 Multijet engines delivering a power of up to 95 HP. With 8 injections per cycle, the 1.3 Multijet II improves low rpm torque delivery by up to 25% and cuts emissions by 6%.

A fundamental boost to obtaining this result was given by the extraordinary growth of methane, the eco-friendliest, most cost-effective fuel available on the market today. A forward-thinking choice, started over ten years ago, has made Fiat become undisputed European leader, as demonstrated by 350,000 units sold until today and a wide range counting seven models for responding to all mobility needs.

Furthermore, Fiat has other innovative eco-tech solutions not strictly related to motor engineering, like the Start&Stop system, introduced on most models of the Euro 5 range, which temporarily stops the engine and starts it up again when the engine is idling and the car is standing: this reduces average fuel consumption by up to 12% on the urban cycle.

The second approach of the Fiat environmental protection strategy consists in raising the awareness of motorists to promote an increasingly more responsible, eco-compatible use of their car. These principles are implemented in eco:Drive, an innovative software program for analysing driving behaviour and helping motorists to optimise consumptions and emissions by connecting through the USB port of the Blue&Me system.

Since it was launched in October 2008, the application has been downloaded (free of charge from www.fiat.com/ecodrive) approximately 100,000 times and is habitually used by nearly 35,000 motorists. This is a remarkable success in terms of popularity and above all a success for the environment, considering that the eco:Ville community has saved in total nearly 3,000 tons of CO2. The system has been recently complemented by the introduction of eco:Drive Fleet, a very easy to use, new version of the program dedicated to more efficient fleet management providing benefits for the ecosystem and for business.

Fiat Panda celebrates 30 years of success and innovation

Fiat Panda II AlessiImage via Wikipedia

The Fiat Panda model celebrates 30 years and, with 6 million units registered, is established as by far the most widely sold city-car. This extraordinary achievement was celebrated on the first day of the Geneva Motor Show 2010, complete with cake and candles, the same stage that saw its debut in 1980, the beginning of a long story of success and innovation.

The "Panda" model is part of Fiat's heritage, which represented a new and unmistakable way of seeing the everyday relationship with the car in automotive history and Italian society: more immediate, more natural, easier. That's why, over time, the Panda has become almost a Brand, with strong emotional value, to which Italian and European drivers have always been profoundly attached.

Following in the footsteps of an established best-seller, the new Panda debuts in September 2003, bearing not only the name but also the spirit of the model, translating the product values and personality that made it a genuine icon in the collective imagination into today's language. The same vehicle will establish itself as the segment's undisputed leader within 6 years: suffice it to say that from its launch to the present day 1.5 million units have been produced and that it closed 2009 with a record 300,000 cars sold.

The commercial success of the new Fiat Panda is also accompanied by the bestowal of many international awards, among which the prestigious “Car of The Year 2004” which, for the first time, was given to a car in this segment. In addition, the car's position in the segment is established by certain records: for example, it was the first spacious compact (less than 4 metres in length) to feature a diesel engine (1986) and, again in this category, it was the first to offer both four-wheel drive (1983) and a range of eco-friendly engines designed to limit fuel consumption (the Panda Elettra was introduced in 1990, one of the first electric cars). Also, in 2004, 2 Panda 4x4s took part in an audacious test drive which began in Kathmandu (Nepal) and ended at Everest's high-tech base camp: it was the first time that a little off-road vehicle reached this base at an altitude of 5,200 metres. An even more extraordinary feat if you bear in mind that the two cars were prepared only by making some modifications to the calibration of the engine management control unit to adapt them to the local petrol.

A curious fact: while, 30 years ago, an average employee would have had to spend 9 months' salary to buy a Panda (3,700,000 Italian liras), today, 6 months' worth are enough to buy the same car. The Panda has been able to stay in step with the times both in terms of functionality and quality/price ratio. However, the Panda is more than a city-car. It is a genuine "platform" on which Fiat has created an entire family of cars with the technology and attention to detail of a higher segment.

Finally, the Fiat Panda has recently undergone a light but expert makeover, without giving up the winning characteristics of Fiat's super-compact: innovative design, advanced technology made accessible to all and smart solutions to simplify and improve on-board comfort. Today, the new range includes engines both traditional (petrol and diesel, from 54 to 100 HP) and alternative engines (methane and LPG), combined with manual or robotised, sequential gearboxes (Dualogic), as well as versions with front-wheel or four-wheel drive, the latter enhanced by an Electronic Locking Differential in combination with the ESP (Electronic Stability Program). That's without mentioning the Special Series, created using the new vehicle as their model: from the Panda Monster, the 4x4 jointly-created by Fiat and Ducati (2006), to the Pandakars which braved the well-known rally in 2007; from the Panda Capri, which offered an exclusive courtesy service on the famous island, to the Panda Mamy, dedicated to mothers, with a wealth of standard equipment for safely transporting the smallest passengers (2008); from the Panda Alessi, a true design object, to the latest two versions, 4x4 Glam and Adventure (2009).

ABARTH PUNTO EVO: The EVOlution of power

The new 165 HP Multiair 1.4 turbo petrol engine is the result of a winning partnership between Fiat Powertrain Technology and Abarth race-derived know-how.

Since the Fiat Powertrain engine was first presented at last year’s Geneva motor show, Abarth engineers have been working hard to squeeze every last drop of power out of it and to improve its sporting performance in typical Abarth style.

Multiair engine technology has revolutionised the world of petrol engines. Compared to a conventional petrol engine of equivalent size, a MultiAir engine develops more power (up to 10%) and more torque (up to 15%), while consuming significantly less (up to 10%) and emitting less CO2 (up to 10%), fewer particulates (up to 40%) and less NOx (up to 60%).

The genius of the Multiair engine is embodied in its electro-hydraulic valve control system. Both fuel consumption and pollutant emissions have been slashed by using the engine’s intake valves to control the air flow directly, without a butterfly valve in the intake. Using this already advanced technology as a starting point, Abarth’s development department has made a series of modifications to arrive at the innovative new 165 HP Multiair 1.4 16 V. Power output, for example, has been optimised by the intelligent application of a new, larger turbocharger from Garrett. The result is superb performance with peak torque of 250 Nm (25.5 kgm) at 2250 rpm, and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in only 7.9 seconds.

The sporty new Abarth Punto Evo also features a new performance mode selection system that modulates engine, braking and steering action to offer a choice of two different driving styles - Sport and Normal – to suit road conditions and driver preference.

The mode selector is conveniently located on the central tunnel in front of the gear lever and lets you switch between the two modes quickly and easily, simply by moving a lever. The currently selected mode is displayed on the dashboard. If you are looking for a safe, relaxing drive, all you have to do is select Normal mode, while if you feel the need to enjoy the full performance of your Abarth Punto Evo, flip the switch to Sport position and thrill to the power! Sport mode makes the car more responsive, using electrical servo systems to modify handling and deliver the ultimate sporting feel. Due attention has also been paid to safety of course, so Sport mode also engages the TTC system automatically.

As in rally cars, the driver is assisted by GSI (Gear Shift Indicator). On the Abarth Punto Evo, GSI acts like an intelligent “co-driver” and provides a signal on the instrument panel to tell you when the right moment has arrived to shift up reducing fuel consumption.

The Abarth Punto Evo’s 1.4 Multiair petrol engine also features Fiat’s innovative Start&Stop system. This switches the engine off automatically when the vehicle comes to a halt and the engine is left to idle, and restarts it again as soon as you are ready to move off. The system finds its ideal application in situations like city traffic and sequences of traffic lights. Whenever the control logic permits, Start&Stop automatically switches off the engine, saving up to 10% of fuel consumption and emissions in the urban cycle and up to 3.5% in the NEDC test cycle.

As soon as you take your foot off the brake or engage first gear, the system immediately restarts the engine to give you instant power and responsiveness. On top of this, if you accidentally stall the engine while moving off, all you have to do is press down on the clutch to re-start it automatically.

Start&Stop offers additional benefits in terms of comfort since it eliminates noise and vibrations from the passenger compartment while the car is stationary.

The system is full interactive, and tells you whether the function is engaged or not via clear indications on the instrument panel. Start&Stop can be disengaged quickly and easily by a switch on the dashboard near the steering column.

The innovative Multiair engine guarantees sports performance plus low emissions and reduced fuel consumption. Tests carried out by Abarth engineers have demonstrated that fuel consumption has been reduced despite the fact that power output has been increased. In particular, consumption is only 8.1 l/100 km in the urban cycle; only 6.0 l/100 km in the combined cycle, and 4.8 l/100 km in the extra-urban cycle. The Multiair engine is also impressively clean and already conforms to Euro 5 standards thanks to emissions of only 142g/km.

The EVOlution of active and passive safety

The Abarth philosophy combines both performance and safety. The Abarth Punto Evo is therefore equipped with a series of highly effective systems to guarantee safe handling on all surfaces.

TTC (Torque Transfer Control) is the key to the car’s active safety. TTC improves the transfer of torque from the engine to the wheels and guarantees excellent handling on bends, making fast driving safer and more fun than ever. TTC is a differential locking system that uses the mechanical differential as a reactive element in the transmission to control torque via the braking system and ESP sensors (wheel speed, steering angle, yaw, etc.).

TTC is activated automatically in Sport mode. When engaged, the system automatically adjusts the degree of diff locking applied in accordance with dynamic factors like speed.

In the area of safety, the Abarth Punto Evo sets new standards thanks to 7 airbags, including a driver knee airbag. The Punto Evo is one of very few cars in its segment with a driver knee airbag fitted as standard on all versions.

The Abarth Punto Evo also boasts a powerful and effective braking system. Disc brakes are fitted to all wheels, with ventilated discs and Brembo double piston, fixed calipers at the front. The suspension system is derived from a tried and tested Abarth configuration. Front suspension is provided by independent McPherson struts, while rear suspension is semi-independent with a torsion bar. Abarth has also fitted a larger anti-roll bar together with front springs that are 20% harder than those of a standard suspension system. The result is impeccable road holding plus a high level of passenger comfort.

The EVOlution of race-inspired aerodynamics

Also on a style level, the changes that Abarth have made to the Punto Evo concentrate on improving the car’s performance and aerodynamics.

Compared to the Fiat version of the car, the front bumper has been extended in width to incorporate the side flaps. The black intake cowl on the front has also been made deeper to match the lateral air outlets. This corrects and controls air flow and significantly improves aerodynamic efficiency around the sides of the car, just as on the full rally version.

The rear of the Abarth features a completely redesigned bumper incorporating side air outlets. The diffuser, designed to optimise air flow, is a major feature of the bumper. The diffuser is the same as on the previous version, but has been given a new surround to enhance its looks and align its styling with the front splitter.

The exhaust features larger diameter twin tail pipes, an obvious tribute to Abarth’s glorious history. The new pipes, however have been given a different satin finish.

The reversing lights and rear fog lights have been moved to the centre of the diffuser, forming a focal point as on formula racing cars, while new side reflectors outline and accentuate the profile of the aerodynamic deflector, simulating the effect created by the LED light cowl on the rear window.

The spoiler has been completely redesigned, not only in terms of colour (it is now the same colour as the rest of the body, giving the car a longer, more dynamic look), but in terms of size too. Its longer, tapered shape has improved the car’s CX and CZ values and made the new Abarth Punto EVO more stable than its predecessor.

The logo trim has also been redesigned and combined with a new grille with a more sporty appearance. In the same way the badge is no longer round as on the previous version but has returned to the original shape, as used on the 500.

The side flaps and skirts are finished in the same colour as the body, emphasising the car’s aggressive nature and its “stuck to the road” handling. The side graphics have also been restyled to match the front bumper and given new dimensions. The result is more in proportion with the side of the car and gives the body colour areas a sleeker appearance. Another new feature is the completely redesigned 17’’ spoked wheels, with the Abarth scorpion logo in the centre.

The car’s interior has been completely updated too. The new materials have an appearance and finish inspired by the surface of motor racing circuits, bringing all the excitement of the track into the car.

The new central control console is divided into two sections. The audio section is characterised by a black surface and a central LCD display. Underneath, a separate section houses the air conditioning controls. The top of the console houses the air vents and a storage compartment.

The purpose-designed Jaeger instrumentation features larger dials for the speedometer and rev counter, new race-inspired graphics, and a new anti-glare cowling covered in leather with open red and yellow stitching.

The visual link with the new textured seats is obvious. The seats and seat backs are upholstered in soft black leather while the seat sides are finished in high-tech fabric to give the ideal balance between comfort, breathability and wear resistance.

Customers can still choose the optional “Abarth Corse” seats by Sabelt. These seats offer a perfect blend of racing characteristics including light weight and the ability hold the body steady against lateral and longitudinal forces.

The EVOlution of power – the “SS” kit

As was to be expected from Abarth, a high performance kit will be made available to coincide with the launch of the Abarth Punto Evo to boost engine power even further. In keeping with Abarth tradition, the tuning kit will give the new car more power than the basic model, enabling the Multiair 1.4 16v Turbo engine to develop a maximum power of 180 HP.

Following Abarth’s performance tuning philosophy, the “SS” kit also includes modifications to chassis components, including perforated, ventilated discs, high performance brake pads, lower springs, and 18” Abarth “SS” alloy wheels painted in white or titanium, and fitted with performance tyres.
The performance delivered by the Abarth Punto Evo “SS” kit is further enhanced by a special “powered by BMC” air filter.

As for the Grande Punto and the 500, the Abarth Punto Evo’s “SS” kit comes in a classic wooden performance case. To guarantee the highest standards of quality and safety, the kit can only be installed by Abarth’s official performance tuning network.

Abarth at the 80th International Motor Show in Geneva

Abarth is presenting a number of important new products at Geneva in response to intense public interest, and to confirm the Fiat Group’s investment in Abarth. In particular, at this year’s Geneva show, the house of the scorpion will be presenting the Abarth Punto Evo and the Abarth 500C, the latest two performance cars based on already popular and acclaimed Fiat models.

The Abarth Punto Evo is the sporty, high-tech version of the Punto Evo that Fiat introduced last September. Abarth is aiming, with this model, to reinforce its standing with young enthusiastic drivers, a process begun with the Grande Punto, which has sold best to customers in the 18 to 30 age group.

A great deal of curiosity has also been built up ahead of the launch of the Abarth 500C, the first convertible to be launched by the renewed Abarth company. This elegant and dynamic car is packed with Abarth racing spirit and the latest performance technology. The Abarth 500C is more than just a developed version of its Fiat counterpart. On the contrary, it represents a strategic choice by Abarth. With it, the company is making clear advances towards those members of the female public who are seeking not only design and elegance but a good dose of sports performance too.

Both new models will go on sale over the next few months through Abarth’s official dealer network in Europe and Japan, closely followed by other markets, and boosting the company’s already excellent results for 2009.

Proof that the direction taken by Abarth is the right one comes from the statistics. These announce quite clearly that the brand is experiencing continuous growth: from 2008 to the present day, Abarth has sold 20,000 cars, including 8,400 Abarth 500s and 2,700 Abarth Grande Puntos, to say nothing of 3,300 performance kits. So it is no wonder that this impressive commercial success has led to an equally rapid growth in the number of dealers and official performance centres associated with the marque.

As well as consolidating its existing markets, Abarth is also extending its network in strategic European towns and cities like Amsterdam and Paris, and expanding into east European markets like Rumania, as well as Mediterranean basin markets like Israel.

The Abarth distribution network is already unique, boasting 141 showrooms, 140 official performance centres and 300 service centres in Europe. These figures do not take account of the recently established “Abarth Racing” performance tuning network, which already boasts 6 centres holding exclusive sales and assistance rights for customers purchasing Abarth’s race-ready models.

The stand at the Geneva show Abarth’s stand at the 2010 edition of the Geneva motor show has been completely redesigned to provide a worthy stage for the international debut of two new models.

The concept behind the new stand is one of simplicity: the stand’s design is not a means of communication in itself, but serves only to drawing attention to the values of the Abarth brand. Wherever its cars are found, Abarth is such a clearly recognised protagonist that it can afford to present itself to the public without frills, in its most essential form. This year’s more essential stand helps focus on the two new Abarths making their world debut in Geneva and destined to enrich the Abarth range.

Abarth’s stage for presenting itself to the world consists of a spacious stand divided into two main illuminated areas, each focusing on one of the new cars.

A huge pane of glass in the centre of the space carries the instantly recognisable Abarth logo, while a large LED display creates a backdrop to the new cars and functions as a central feature in the stand’s design.

The entire stand is based on symmetric, straight lines, right angles and neutral, almost unnoticeable materials. White structural components and an abundance of transparent materials eliminate visual “noise” and focus clearly on content.

Technical drawings of Abarth vehicles are displayed under the glass floor. This intelligent solution makes the drawings easily visible to all visitors, reflecting the era when Abarth cars used to have partly raised engine covers to display their performance parts.

Intangible content like light, sound, and digital media is used not as a mere accessory, but to help identify the stand’s focal points in a more integrated and coordinated manner, and to create a sense of dynamism and movement. The neutral and minimalist space is filled and coloured by scenes representing a sequence of Abarth values: challenge, passion, ingenuity, Italian style, participation, determination, and authenticity.

The stand creates a fascinating and warm welcome to the world of Abarth and provides an ideal context for presenting the two latest expressions of the marque of the scorpion: the Abarth Punto Evo and the Abarth 500C.
